The Internet, short for Interconnected Networks, is an electronic communication network that connects computers and smart devices to send and receive data. Thanks to the internet, it is possible to access any kind of data at any time. For example, your e-mail can pass through different server networks on the internet and reach its recipient in a very short time.
The physical internet is the use of the internet for logistics. Logistics-related data and documents are sent and received over the internet via computers and smart devices, enabling transparent global logistics management independent of time and place. Logistics-related data and documents sent via e-mail are transmitted to the relevant parties simultaneously with product movement.
The Physical Internet aims to enable real-time tracking of the physical movement of products and their transportation containers such as containers, swap bodies, pallets or transportation packaging such as parcels, drums, etc. in the supply chain, including disposal or recycling, by means of Cellular, RFID, IoT and Cloud-based digital technologies, and to share accurate data on this physical movement in real time among stakeholders including manufacturers, logistics companies, sellers, wholesalers, official institutions such as customs, financial companies such as banks and customers.
Product movement and the data related to this movement are not limited to the transportation of products. This data also includes data related to the period of downtime of products at logistics locations such as warehouses, distribution centers, ports, transshipment centers, terminals, etc., including the handling or transfer of products to another means of transport.
With traceable product movement, uninterrupted and faster delivery can be achieved by preventing unnecessary waiting or changing routes by knowing in advance the possible blockages and waits on the roads or logistics locations; by knowing possible idle or unusable transport vehicles, logistics locations and even empty and non-movement times, waste can be avoided by using them efficiently, cost benefits can be achieved and logistics demands and needs can be met without excessive investment (only 50% more logistics investment may be sufficient to meet a 300% increase in transportation demand); it can reduce environmental pollution by more efficient use of available capacity in transport vehicles and logistics locations in the logistics process and by avoiding unnecessary or empty movements.
Digitalization is essential for the physical Internet. Digitalization is the digitization of information so that it can be read by any computer or smart device.
