Heart Shaped Slippers

When the boss of the company asked for the heart-shaped slippers, gloves and towels he had seen at a fair in China to be sold on Valentine’s Day, the Purchasing department purchased the heart-shaped slippers from China to be delivered to Istanbul in mid-January. On the morning of February 10 (Saturday), when the Warehouse Manager saw that the number on the ringing phone was that of the on-duty warehouse supervisor, he was worried that “something had happened?” When he answered the phone, the on-duty supervisor said, “Manager, they brought us 7 containers from China. What should we do? There is nowhere to step in the warehouse!” The Warehouse Manager said, “Oh my God. There was no such arrival of goods.” The Warehouse Manager immediately called the Purchasing Manager and started talking in an angry voice. The containers had arrived for the company, had been delayed because of the wait in the Suez Canal, and he didn’t know about all this. When he found out that it was the goods that the boss wanted, he didn’t push any further and called the warehouse supervisor and said in an angry and exasperated tone, “If necessary, make space in the warehouse by putting the pallets on the floor 4-5 rows on top of each other and put the incoming goods there. Do I have to teach you?”

Or let the scenario go like this.

The warehouse manager said to the warehouse supervisor on the phone, “Oh my God. There was no such arrival. Anyway, it’s not a problem. Let’s use the digital platform from the meeting you attended yesterday. If you remember, the young man who didn’t explain the digital platform gave an example about Valentine’s Day in case there was such a case to explain how the platform would be beneficial. Let’s find the appropriate warehouse from the web page on that card and direct the trucks there. At least we will have tried it. If not, we will somehow place the incoming goods. This is our job. We are used to it now,” he said.

Flexibility is the ability to change and adapt to change in a short time with little cost and effort.

Flexibility is very important for Supply Chain and in my opinion, flexibility is the most important thing for agile supply chain.

In normal times, managing supply chain and logistics is actually a piece of cake. If there is an emergency or unexpected situation, i.e. something outside of routine operation or planning, managing the supply chain and logistics becomes more difficult. Managing this, or rather adapting to these changes, requires ingenuity. That skill is flexibility and the agility that comes with flexibility. In this way, companies can change and adapt to change in a short time with little cost and effort.

Warehouse-driven change and adapting to change is not as easy as transportation.

Flexibility in transportation processes is easy. There are many alternative solutions that you can implement in a short time. For example, you can change the type of transport, you can use different means of transport, you can rent any number of trucks from the market in a short period of time, or you can buy several trucks in a short period of time if you are very tight.

On the other hand, storage may not be as flexible as transportation. Because you cannot find the most suitable warehouse when you want, you cannot find the most suitable warehouse where you want, you cannot change the size of your warehouse when you want and you cannot change the location of your warehouse when you want because there are not enough warehouses for logistics services, it is difficult and laborious to find suitable warehouses, warehouse investment is expensive, warehouse investment takes a long time. In short, warehouse-oriented change and adaptation to change is not as easy as transportation.

For example, the purchasing department bought 1,000 pallets of raw materials at a very cheap price (should be used in production within a month) BUT there is no space in your warehouse and you can’t find a warehouse for 1 month, or you are going to move from your warehouse in Çorlu to Kadıköy on Valentine’s Day when e-commerce customers’ “desire for much shorter delivery times” is increasing rapidly, or where will you put the equipment and materials for a 3-month project in Muş, or the sales department launched a 15-day discount campaign but there is no space in your warehouse for products coming off the line and from suppliers!…

Flexibility for storage spaces is provided by “on demand” storage.

Companies can benefit from flexibility with “on demand” storage. Flexibility for storage areas is provided by on demand storage. Those who need storage in any location, at any time, in any size, can find storage space in the location, time, duration (date range), size and features they want with “on demand” storage, without the need for long-term contracts, and pay for it on an as-used (duration and size) basis. For this flexibility, there should be as much storage as needed in the place where it is needed. Otherwise, “flexibility” can be difficult or even impossible.

“On demand” storage solution ensures that storage space is available when, where, where, where, how big and what is needed and that the supply chain is flexible.

Vacancies in storage spaces, even 1 pallet of empty space, can be used temporarily, even for 1 day, by those who need it. “On demand” storage matches these storage space vacancies with those who need them and also provides a sharing economy (shared use) environment.

With the common use (sharing) of storage space, those who need storage space can gain flexibility and use storage space at any time, in any place, with any characteristics, for any quantity, for any period of time.

For the desired time, place and quantity

The “on demand storage” solution and the “Gray Storage Area” concept developed by DepOrtak, which enables storage for the desired time, place and quantity thanks to its smart listing, filtering, matching and reservation algorithm and technological infrastructure developed by DepOrtak software developers, provide storage flexibility for agile supply chain.
